The French demanded an amount of coal that was a "technological impossibility" to the Germans to pay for.[6] France also insisted around the demilitarisation from the German Rhineland from the hope of hindering any probability of the foreseeable future German assault and giving France a physical protection barrier between by itself and Germany.[7]
